The dimensions at a glance
| Graphic | Size | Limit / note |
|---|---|---|
| Server icon | ≥ 512 × 512 px (1:1) | masked round |
| Emoji | 128 × 128 px | max. 256 KB · PNG/JPG/GIF |
| Sticker | 320 × 320 px | max. 512 KB · PNG/APNG |
| Server banner | 960 × 540 px (16:9) | depending on boost level |
| Profile picture (user) | ≥ 128 × 128 px | masked round |
The server icon
At least 512 × 512 px, square, masked round — so subject centered with a safety margin to the corners (they vanish in the circle). For a busy server whose icon appears tiny in the server bar: a reduced, high-contrast symbol beats any filigree logo. A transparent background (PNG) or a rich color both work.
Emojis: the 256 KB hurdle
Custom emojis are the heart of a Discord server — and the most common source of frustration on upload. Two things decide success:
- The 256 KB limit. Static PNGs are no problem, but animated GIF emojis blow past it easily. Then it helps to: use fewer frames, smaller dimensions, stronger compression — through the GIF compression tool, until the file is under 256 KB.
- Recognizability at 32 pixels. Emojis are displayed tiny. What looks pretty at 128 px must also be readable as a 32 px symbol — so heavy simplification, a clear silhouette, few colors. The same design question as with a favicon.
Transparency is mandatory
Emojis and stickers appear in the chat on light and dark backgrounds. A white box around the subject gives away the beginner. So: cut out as a PNG with a transparent background so only the subject floats. Why the transparency only survives in PNG (not in JPG) is explained in Alpha channel and transparency.
Stickers and banner
- Stickers: 320 × 320 px, up to 512 KB, PNG or animated APNG. Bigger and more expressive than emojis, but the same transparency rule.
- Server banner: 960 × 540 px (16:9), unlocked depending on the server's boost level. Keep important things centered, as it's cropped depending on the view.
Consistency pays off
An emoji set in the same style (same line weight, same color world) looks more professional than randomly mixed single emojis. As with any graphics series, a fixed color palette helps keep the look.
Frequently asked questions
What size does a Discord server icon need?
At least 512 × 512 pixels, square. Discord displays it masked round, so keep the subject centered with a safety margin to the edge. A PNG with transparency or a rich background both work; for servers with many members, a simple, high-contrast symbol pays off.
What size and limit do Discord emojis have?
Emojis are uploaded at 128 × 128 pixels and displayed small. The file may be at most 256 KB — with animated emojis (GIF) that gets tight fast. Important: the subject must be recognizable even at about 32 pixels of display, so heavily simplified.
Why is my emoji not being accepted?
Usually because of the 256 KB limit — especially with animated GIF emojis. Solution: shrink the GIF (fewer frames, smaller dimensions) or use a static PNG. Second most common cause: the wrong format; PNG, JPG, and GIF are allowed.
Do Discord emojis need a transparent background?
Almost always yes. Emojis appear in the chat on light and dark backgrounds; a white or colored box looks distracting. So cut them out as PNGs with a transparent background so only the subject is visible.
